The story of my milestone
Although the name may not immediately be associated with leathercraft...
It does feel fitting! It carries a metaphorical image that, to me, represents a few layers of meaning to me.
First of all It is every step, every process, every level within each project that leads to the next one. Each time, I throw the stone a little further away, only to pick it up again afterward.
It also shows that the products I make originate from craftsmanship. Additionally, with every project, each stone i throw, I grow a little further myself. the material is in this way teaching me what it needs in order to become what it supposed to be. I cannot do this on my own. No crafter can. A crafter builds stuff because i my self or in many cases the other, a.k.a. the client needs it too. To make life pleasant or wield life itself. the client makes it possible for me to sustain my desire in making things.
To get to that milestone of where i am now. WHich is a never ending path. but i have lost the path as well. i was merely wandering around. When i look back on those days there are some key moments that hold that spark., what makes the flame burning now. One of those days was me playing a mmorpg game on the xbox called oblivion. Nothing better than to create a character to your own desire and dreams. leveling that avatar of yours up to that point of absolute best. At one point i ... excuse me ...., my avatar was working on a workbench,.
it said to me:. you lack the required skill to improve this item. i was dumbstrucked by it. It hit me so hard,. my avatar in the tv slapped me in real time in the face. i can build a skill in here the tv or i can build a skill over here where i am. the real world. my search for building things had begun or was in fact started again.
Where to start with this endeavor. For a long time i was just paralyzed by it. i did squat,. nothing. i just kept wandering. But not unnoticed. You look around and things come to your senses,. that So much is lost to our own over consumption and with that our own skills. When something is broken, you will buy another because its cheaper. At the same time you will probably buy it from a factory where almost no human hand has touched the product. in my mind that product has no soul. It carries nothing. At the same time this industry what we support destroys not only crafters and artisans who really put just that in the item,. it crushes the craft almost out of our own sight. We lose where we came from and with that our legacy as a whole. we lose connection with each other and we lose skills what makes us human. If we dont watch out. our whole lineage of crafters of us being human will be lost. to us. to our incapacity of doing things, or our love for making things.
I began sniffing around with materials,,. sewing,. woodworking classes. callipgraphy. drawing. sculptoring and in the end i met a long overlooked material.
leather.
I took one workshop and i was sold. I bought a kit and just went on. Just trying things out and a lot of watching youtube. seeing other crafters in this world of making., At some point you ask yourself. What do i wanna make???. thats when your own true desire, your own heart translates itself into your hands. skill makes desire real.
when you look at old ww2 photos or any era before. you see man and woman of oneness. they had clothes and items which make them who they were. They were defined by there clothes and things they carried. we lost that a bit. and so i want to create things that not only look good but is of use to you. ofcourse this means you will look after it. because it now defines you. in the end you may give it to your grandchildren, or a dear friend because it lasts as well.
Every product you buy from me, is me. every mm every hook stitch or glued part. my time. my blood sweat and tears are in it. its a little soul of me you are carrying now. for your own milestones to come.
This photo is actually of skyrim but i had the experience in oblivion
